It?s a fundamental problem but a scientific fact

Emerald Rose interpreta
WE COME FROM MONKEYS
Lletra i música de Brian Sullivan i Larry Morris
Arranjament Emerald Rose

A man named Darwin – had a revelation
He said all life evolved from the confusion
He had a theory. He made some people nervous
When he came to the… embarrasing conclusion
We come from monkeys. We’re not so special.
We’ve only got…a little extra DNA
The chimpanzees…are very close to us
Australopithecus? He’s not so far away
[Chorus]
We come from monkeys, swingin in the trees
A little bit of monkey inside you and me
Monkey in the middle monkey on your back
It’s a fundamental problem but a scientific fact
We come from monkeys
The feeble minded… said creation was the answer
They got upset…their nose got outta joint
They say we’re missing…the monkey in the middle
They’re picking nits…it kinda proves the point
You’re not so hairy. You haven’t got a tail
You’re not adapted – for living in a tree
But if you care – to count up all your chromosomes
You’re ninety eight point four percent a chimpanzee
[Chorus]
Double helix monkey bars, feel the primal beat
Six million years we been walkin’ on our feet
A barrel full of monkeys, swingin’ from the family tree…
We don’t wanna start a social revolution
we just wanna talk about some monkey evolution
But the knuckle-draggin’ stool-flingin’ fools just don’t wanna see
We come from monkeys…
If you can’t handle…the thought of evolution
You might just call it…intelligent design
But if the universe…keeps on evolving
Then maybe you should just evolve a bigger mind
[Chorus]
Monkey see – Monkey do –
Monkey see – Monkey do –
Monkey see, monkey do, Monkey me, monkey you,
let’s all face it it’s all true we come from
monkeys

ABOUT THE SONG

Logan’s had the idea of writing this song for over fifteen years, but
it never quite manifested. Larry & Logan collaborated on getting
this one finished, with a lot of lines brainstormed and researched
(thanks to Discover, National Geographic, and the venerable Jared
Diamond for information) before being assembled into verses and bridge.
[For you science purists, yes, we considered the title “We Come From
Genetic Precursors To Monkeys” but it was rejected on artistic
grounds.] The tune started out very David Byrne and evolved more
towards a rock sound as we went along, with more of an art-rock bridge.
It’s much more straight-ahead rock and roll than our typical songs.
We find ourselves “defenders of evolution” more by accident than
original intent. We never expected the subject to become this
controversial again, after the resolution of the Scopes monkey trials.
It turns out some people have a strong capacity to ignore solid
evidence, established theory, and reason in favor of a perspective that
makes them feel better. We, on the other hand, are scratching our
vestigial head-hair in puzzlement, for what could be better than a
theory that states that we are evolving on an upward spiral towards
greater intelligence and connection to the Cosmic All? Perhaps we
prefer to be considered Rising Monkeys rather than Fallen Angels.
Anyway, whatever your own beliefs and opinions on the subject, we hope
you enjoy our homage to the mighty monkey.

EMERALD ROSE – THE BAND

Emerald Rose is one of the top Celtic folk-rock bands in the Southeast
US. A rich “world fusion” sound with influences ranging from the
Chieftains to Jethro Tull has given this band a ten year career and
national following. The band’s original lyrics address everything from
Celtic myth to modern science, often with a touch of humor. Blending
vocal harmonies, pennywhistle and world percussion with driving guitars
and bass, their sound is “rock-n-reel” but not ear-splitting.
Brian Sullivan, Arthur Hinds, Larry Morris and Clyde Gilbert formed
Emerald Rose in late 1996. The band performed their first live
professional gig on St. Patrick’s Day, 1997. Inspired by the energy the
four created together on stage and in the studio, Emerald Rose released
their first self-titled CD in 1998. Since then, Emerald Rose have
released five more independently produced CDs: “Bending Tradition”
(2000), “Fire in the Head” (2002), “Celtic Crescent” (2003), “Songs for
the Night Sky” (2004), and “Archives of Ages to Come” (2005).
