friend in Catalonia sent me an interesting e-mail about an incident
that occurred between the language there, Catalan, and the Spanish
government in Madrid. Catalonia is an autonomous region in northeastern Spain with its own language, people, and culture. Consequently,
even though Catalonia is officially a part of Spain, because of their
uniqueness from the rest of the country, they do not consider
themselves Spanish, but Catalan. The
Catalan language is also coofficial with Spanish, and apparently there
is a law in the region that products sold at supermarkets should have
bilingual labels with both Catalan and Spanish.
However, they say this law is ignored, and labels are printed only in Spanish. In
response to this situation a 14 year-old boy sent out an e-mail to
three supermarkets requesting that they comply with the law.
As a result, the police came to his home, and from
there he had to testify in his own defense in the national court in
Madrid, having been accused of terrorism.

amigo em Catalunha me mandou um e-mail interesante sobre algo que
aconteceu com a língua aí, o catalão, e o governo espanhol em Madrid. Catalunha é uma região autónoma no nordeste da Espanha com uma língua, povo, e cultura distinta. Por isso, ainda que Catalunha é oficialmente uma parte de Espanha, porque dessa distinção eles não são espanhois, são catalões.
Também, em Catalunha a língua catalana é co-oficial com
o castelhano, e parece que existe uma lei que manda que as marcas nos
produtos de comida são escritas em castelhano e catalão também.
Mas evidentamente são escritas só em castelhano. Por isso um jovem de 14 anos escreveu um e-mail a tres supermercados, lhes pedindo para obedecer essa lei.
Então o policía veio à casa dele e a sua família, e ele
tive que testificar na sua defensa no tribunal nacional em Madrid
porque foi acusado de terrorismo.

entrevistas são pela maior parte em catalão com subtítulos em inglês,
mas acho que por brasileiros catalão não é tão difícil entender.
