El Negre enraona sobre els rius
He conegut rius:
N’he conegut de tan antics com el món
i més encara que la flux de la sang per les venes.
La meua ànima esdevé cabalosa com els rius.
Vaig banyar-me a l’Eufrates quan l’alba rejovenia.
Vaig construir la meua caseta prop del Congo
i em va agafar un son profund.
Vaig guaitar el Nil i hi plantí piràmides.
Vaig sentir el cant del Mississipí quan Abe Lincoln
baixava a Nova Orleans, i vaig veure la fangosa
entranya de la terra com esdevenia
daurada quan el sol es ponia.
He conegut rius:
antics rius de capvespres.
La meua ànima s’ha fet cabalosa com els rius.
The Negro Speaks of Rivers
I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older
than the flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
