The tower of La Carrova

It’s the only medieval monument of architectonic value that has remained in the municipality of Amposta. It is a typical gothic vigilance construction built in order to keep an eye on the area, although it’s got a great quantity of romanesque features. Its architectonic style has led to think that it was built in the second half of the 13th century. A great deal of historians such as Carreras Candi, Enric Bayerri and Francesc Esteve Gálvez have devoted to the study of this tower. The last one published a full complete assignment of it in 1956. Until 1562, the access to the tower was thorugh an open window situated on the first floor, but the following year a man called Joan Barberá opened a door on the main floor. Just opposite, on the left side of the Ebre river, is the Campredo tower, which is thought to be a twin one. According to tradition, between both towers there was a line which prevented the enemy ships to arrive in Tortosa. Nowadays the Tower of La Carrova and the Suspension Bridge are the most outstanding landmarks in Amposta.
