STRUCTURE OF
INFINITIVE
Just having a look at sport news I realised the high use of
the structure of infinitive, as it
happens in other languages such as Latin, so as to express the consequence of a
previous event.
– Nigeria´s Victor Ikapeke scored the goals as Monaco beat
Nancy 2-0 at home to move within one point of leader Paris SG.
– Alan Shearer, back after a month-long injury lay-off,
scored late in the first half to
allow English League Leader Newcastle to stay top.
– Oleg Beohapsven took advantage of a mistake in the
Wimbledon defense to put
Liverpool ahead after just 33 seconds.
– Unfashionable London Club Wimbledon extended their
unbeaten run to 15 games, Stan Collymore took advantage of a mistake in the
Wimbledon defense to put

– Barcelona took the lead, Defender Abelardo rose unmarked to head home a corner from Josep
Guardiola.
– Marcus Gargle scored the only goal on the stroke of half time to

Now we are going to see a clear example of two different
styles of writing and speaking . Two sentences, which if we could hear them we
would notice a great difference in pronounciation, as one comes from British
English and the other from American English. But they also differ both morphologically
and syntactically as well as in vocabulary.
– I came back from my holiday last autumm to find that the dustmen had left a
load of rubbish in my front garden, so I complained to the caretaker.
– I came back from my vacation last fall and found that the garbage men had left
a load of garbage in my front yard, so I complained to the janitor.
