UK PM in European Parliament

A fine speech, but Gordon Brown is still in denial

Today, in advance of the G20 Summit on 2 April, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown addressed the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg.

Caroline Lucas, Green MEP for South-East England, commented:

“In his speech to the European Parliament today, Gordon Brown pressed all the right buttons and raised all the right issues – but unfortunately it seems he is still in denial on how we got into the current crisis and what to do about it. (segueix…)

Brown referred to the financial crisis as a “hurricane” as if it were a natural disaster and not the logical consequence of the financial deregulation that he has been in the forefront of promoting. He should not be allowed to remodel himself as the poster boy of financial regulation before he admits his light-touch policies contributed to the mess.

Brown spoke eloquently on the problems of unemployment and climate change, but why is his government investing so little in green energies that could address both?

If we are to believe he can be part of the solution, Gordon Brown needs to recognise that he has been part of the problem. It is time for him to acknowledge his former role and to apologise for it.”

London Green MEP Jean Lambert added:

“I welcome that Gordon Brown reminded us of the “social chapter” but I wish he would get on and write the book. He lauds Europe for its contribution on social policy but supports Britain’s opt-out on crucial working time legislation.

Brown talked about poverty in the developing world with some passion. It is a shame he did not join the dots and acknowledge that climate change will hit poor people in the developing world hardest. A shame too, that he demonstrated no such passion when talking about social disparities in Europe, which are increasing dramatically.”
