Catalonia: a new EU Member State? The EU institutions must be prepared.

Dear colleagues,

Tomorrow, September 11th, is the National Day of Catalonia. Thousands of people will be in the streets with a clear demand: that Catalonia become a state integrated into the European Union. This is a public outcry that has bypassed, by far, the political parties to become a general demand. Hundreds of senyeres (catalan flags) will march alongside the European flags. The state model that emerged after 40 years of Francoism is clearly perceived as exhausted, and there is a growing perception that the EU should step up and assume that there are new social and national realities in this dynamic project that insist on an accomodation different than the current one.

Many of the people who will be tomorrow on the street had not felt the need to make this demand before. And yet tomorrow they will join a demonstration that is expected to be massive and peaceful. These people have put high expectations in the European project and in its values. I hope that the European institutions will live up to these expectations, and will respond responsibly and fairly.

Therefore, dear colleagues (of the EP), I ask you to listen carefully this legitimate and democratic demand. And I urge you to be prepared and ready to face a process that is surely going to be complex, but that also seems to be unstoppable.

Demà, 11 de setembre, és la Diada nacional de Catalunya. Milers de persones sortiran al carrer amb una demanda clara: que Catalunya esdevingui un estat integrat en la Unió Europea. Es tracta d’un clam ciutadà que ha superat, en molt, la dimensió que conformen els partits polítics. Centenars de senyeres onejaran al costat de la bandera europea. El model d’Estat sorgit després de 40 anys de franquisme està clarament percebut com a esgotat, i creix la percepció que la Unió Europea hauria de fer un pas endavant i assumir que hi ha noves realitats socials i nacionals en el si d’aquest projecte dinàmic que reclamen una encaix diferent a l’actual.

Molta de la gent que serà demà al carrer no havia sentit abans la necessitat d’abanderar aquesta reivindicació. I, malgrat tot, demà se sumarà a un clam que es preveu massiu i pacífic. Són moltes les expectatives que tota aquesta gent té posades en el projecte europeu, i en els seus valors. Confio que les instituciones europees sabrem estar a l’alçada d’aquestes expectatives, i respondre-hi de manera responsable i justa.

Per tot això, benvolgudes i benvolguts col·legues (del PE), us demano que estigueu atents a aquesta legítima, i democràtica, demanda. I us insto a que estiguem preparats i preparades per tal d’afrontar un procés que serà complex, sens dubte, però també imparable.
