(Segueix…

"Intergroup shocked by remarks made by Moscow Mayor"

The Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights reacted with shock to the remarks made by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. The remarks were made by the mayor upon hearing of the news that the ban on Gay Prides would be taken to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The mayor of Moscow called Gay Prides a ‘Satanist Happening’ and promised further bans of Gay Prides.

"The Intergroup is shocked by these remarks, they are unbecoming of an elected official," Michael Cashman, President of the Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights remarked, "We further condemn the Mayor’s tirades. Equality and the fundamental freedom to assembly are universal human rights. As the mayor of the capital city of one of the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, his disregard for fundamental rights is all the more surprising."

Sophie in ´t Veld, one of the Intergroup’s Vice-President and the Intergroup’s delegate to last year’s Moscow Pride, highlighted how serious these statements were; "These statements are absolutely unacceptable. Mr. Luzhkov‘s comments alienate and degrade the gay and lesbian community of Moscow. Mr. Luzhkov must ensure all of Moscow’s citizens, regardless of their faith or orientation, enjoy the fundamental freedoms that are, as far as I know, still a part of Russian law. After all, Russia has subscribed to these principles as a member of the Council of Europe."

The Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights adopted as part of its work programme the follow-up on prides. In 2006, a number of pride marches for equality and diversity were summarily banned or otherwise impeded either by authority decisions or by violent actions of extreme right groups, "We do not want a repeat of 2006, disrupting any group’s right to their freedom of assembly is a challenge on the fundamental rights for all," Alexander Stubb, Vice-President of the Intergroup confirmed, "That is why we will be coordinating our actions closely in the European Parliament in order to ensure that Prides in Central and Eastern Europe have a strong presence from MEPs."

Raul Romeva, who also sits on the steering committee of the Intergroup, called upon the European Union’s Council of Ministers and Commission to monitor the situation for the Russian LGBT community closely, "The fact that the decision to ban this Pride March has had to be taken to the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights highlights the virulent hatred being faced by the Russian LGBT community. Europe owes it to the Russian LGBT community to offer political support and to raise awareness of the discriminatory practices facing them – something we are committed to doing."

  1. Ben entès, l’alcalde no mostra una actitud homòfoba (si no, seria hostil als heterosexuals), sinó homoerotòfoba (hostil als homosexuals).

Per cert, una actitud totalment censurable.
