A favor d’un embargament global d’armes sobre Birmània

Adjunto la carta que, en tant que membres de Caucus Parlamentari per a Birmània, hem enviat a Nacions Unides reclamant un Embargament Global d’Armes per a Birmània:

H.E. Susan E. Rice
Ambassador

Permanent Mission of the United States to the United Nations

140 East 45th Street

New York, N.Y. 10017

19th June 2009

Dear H.E. Susan E. Rice,

We, members of European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma, are writing to you to express our concern over the current situation in Burma.

There can now be no doubt that the dictatorships claim that it will reform, and that 2010 elections will bring change, are totally false.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma?s democracy movement, is now spending her 14th birthday in detention, and a sham of a trial will ensure she will remain detained when elections take place next year.

At the same time a new military offensive in Eastern Burma is forcing thousands from their homes, joining the hundreds of thousands who are already internally displaced, or the tens of thousands in refugee camps in Thailand. These attacks are not counter-insurgency as claimed. The United Nations itself has said that civilians are being deliberately targeted. These are war crimes.

These two new developments follow the violent suppression of peaceful protests in 2007, and the blocking of international aid following cyclone Nargis in 2008.

Three statements by the Security Council have now been ignored by the State Peace and Development Council. This defiance cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged.

The time is long overdue for a global arms embargo against Burma, and we call on your government to publicly commit itself to such a step.

Yours sincerely,

John Bercow, Member of Parliament, Great Britain

Petr Bratsky, Member of Parliament, Czech Republic

Simon Coveney, Member of Parliament, Ireland
