“While the amendments proposed by the Hungarian authorities are welcome, they ignore the core provisions of the media law that will undermine media freedom in Hungary: notably, the politicised media supervision authority. This law has effectively been designed with the intention of restricting media activities in Hungary and limiting critical scrutiny of the government. This is in direct conflict with the core principles of the EU, as set out in the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Commission and Council must continue to push for the complete overhaul or withdrawal of the law on this basis.”

“Today’s statement by the Commission seems to have been cynically choreographed, coming one day ahead of a vote in the European Parliament on a resolution criticising the media law. However, the core concerns that are raised in the main draft resolution remain valid. We hope that this resolution will be adopted tomorrow and that the Commission and the Council respond to the issues it raises: namely the conflict between this law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, particularly via the politicised media supervision authority.

“The EP vote should clearly now go ahead tomorrow as planned. The adoption of a strong resolution by parliament is important both in the context of the Hungarian media law but also the wider debate on growing media restrictions in other EU member states. The EP has a crucial role to play in defending the core principles on which the EU is founded.”
