Women’s Day: Persisting gender inequality must be ended (Press Release, Brussels, 8 March 2007)
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Thursday 8 March, Raül Romeva, vice-chairperson of the EP Committee on Women’s Rights and Equal Opportunities said: "We celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and the inclusion of the principle of equal treatment for men and women into the Treaty. Despite this, however, women do not in general enjoy equal status and rights. There is still a large gap between the recognition of a right and its realisation. (segueix…)
"Despite the directive on the principle of equal pay for equal work of equal value, which was implemented 30 years ago, the gender pay gap between men and women in the EU is still 15% on average and up to 33% in some EU Member States. The labour market remains gender segregated: women are over-represented in low-wage, low-status and precarious jobs and under-represented in managerial and professional employment. The average percentage of part-time employment among women is 30.4% compared with only 6.6% among men, with the difference increasing since 1998. Women must not be made to wait another 50 years for equality to become a reality in the EU."
