Donar la cara (Putting your money where your mouth is)

(English version follows)

(English)
I’m from the United States. We have this idea that if you work really hard, you should be able to achieve whatever your goals may be. We don’t like arbitrary rules or limits, or people telling us what to do, or trying to make us do things their way. When Britain tried to tax us without even giving us representation in Parliament, we said, thanks but no thanks and created our own country, and never looked back. So when I first came here more than 25 years ago, it was kind of frustrating to see this people who clearly felt like a nation and wanted to control their own destiny, but who didn’t stand up to the people who were making that impossible.

It’s like when you have a friend who’s at a job that they hate, but they don’t ever stand up to their boss. They’re paying Joe twice as much as me, they tell you. They gave Susan the really nice office, they complain. I work really hard, why don’t they ever notice? And what can you do but offer sympathy? But inside, you’re like, so why don’t you do something about it?

But since 2010 everything has changed. All of a sudden, Catalans are actively saying what they want and making it happen. It’s inspiring. And not just dreaming, but putting their money where their mouth is, working really hard. Thousands and thousands of you volunteer to collect signatures, organize rallies, light candles, create lipdub singalongs, edit videos, translate stories, educate neighbors and friends, write economic reports, tweet news, share outrage, hold hands along 250 miles! and more and more and more. I know you’re spending countless hours doing everything possible to just be able to have a democratic vote, to find out if the Catalan people want to become independent. And then there’s the whole campaign to explain why a Yes-Yes vote is so necessary and beneficial to the people of Catalonia. It’s a monumental task, and they’ve rolled up their sleeves and are going to make it happen: peacefully, democratically, joyfully, relentlessly.
And they’re told it’s not possible, it’s just not done, you can’t peacefully redraw borders, that’s unheard of, and just like typical Americans, the Catalans are ignoring the naysayers, and just keep right along doing what they know is right for them and their people. They’re determined and I’m proud to count myself among them.
