Cabanyal’s Paradigm

I a la inversa.

Protesters devise alternative plans for Zurich gallery extension

Campaigners are trying to force David Chipperfield to move his
planned £100 million Kunsthaus extension in central Zurich by 10m.

The
project will have to be approved by a city referendum, and the council
is taking the well-organised protest seriously. But it denies the Open
Peacock campaign – named after the square where the Kunsthaus stands –
is responsible for the project falling six months behind schedule.

Chipperfield,
who won the scheme in competition in 2008, has already been forced to
shrink it by 6% following recommendations from the jury.

The
protesters, who support the project in principle, claim it would
overshadow the square in its planned location and cause overcrowding
when visitors queue for what would be Switzerland’s biggest art gallery.

They have drawn up their own detailed plans showing how stepping it back by 10m would create a more generous entrance.
Gabi
Hildesheimer, one of the leaders of Open Peacock, said: “It’s not
Chipperfield but council planning officers who made the mistake by
designing it where you feel scared by the huge mass of the building.
It’s a very narrow street and there’s no air between the street and the
building. The extension is 21m, almost twice as high as the existing
building.

“Zurich has a long history of shooting down good
projects because some groups don’t agree with the details. The last
four or five big projects in Zurich were stopped completely because of
our very democratic system. We are trying not to do that.”
Caruso St
John’s Nail House and Rafael Moneo’s Congress Centre are among previous
victims of Zurich’s planning referendums. If the Kunsthaus receives
planning approval this summer it will be put to a public vote in 2013.
It could open in 2017.

Chipperfield’s office stood by the plans and said any move would result in the partial loss of an art garden behind the museum.
The
city council invited Chipperfield to Zurich to address a meeting of 400
local architects, who it hopes will act as ambassadors for the scheme.
Urs Spinner from the council said Chipperfield had been “warmly
welcomed.

He defended the fact that campaigners were not invited
to the meeting, saying some groups were “more equal” than others and
that architects were “very important stakeholders”.

He said: “They
were free to think what they want but we wanted them to understand the
project. They were pleased so we were lucky. It’s not manipulation, it’s
very open and democratic.”
