Canfranc as Part of Benoît Sokal’s “Syberia” – Or Kate Walker in the Pyrenees

At last, after years of laziness and elusion, I have played the PC-game that my sister always recommended me to play: Syberia; both parts.

I have to apologize to Ari for not having done this while she was still here, to be able to tell her —with frank enthusiasm— how pleasant and deeply absorbing these games are. I’m so sorry; so deeply! …

I won’t comment here about the game; its merits and its beauty (it is graphically exquisite!); I will just point out one feature that Ari never noticed as far as I can say. Several buildings depicted in Syberia I (the sumptuous spa at the end, and also the great, apparently deserted railway station of “Komkolzgrad”) might have been inspired by the old –now abandoned– International Station of Canfranc, very close to the border between Huesca (Spain) and France, in a province in the Pyrenees which belonged until 1714 to the Crown of Aragon, and was not a Spanish-speaking land (as the very name attests), until it was conquered and indecently annexed to what is now the Kingdom of Spain.

I will have to revisit the game in order to take some appropriate screenshots of the Komkolzgrad railway station, but meanwhile I present here the actual building that I’m referring to (anyway, I’m sure that everyone who has played that game will feel the déjà -vu when watching it).
