La Inveterada Memòria

The first time I watched “Rosine” -an oil by the Belgian surrealist painter Paul Delvaux, from 1968- I said to myself “this tall, slim girl with the red hat and the fan looks very much like Ariel”. As a matter of fact, quite a few women in Delvaux’s paintings of the two last decades have a noticeable resemblance of my sister, but that one in “Rosine” was just ersatz (at least, seen -as is the case- from the side and a little from behind). – [You may see the complete painting in my second post on P. Not many of these young (perhaps teenaged) women wear such a distinctive red hat, however; only one as far as I’m aware of right now: the shiniest figure in “Hommage à Jules Verne”, from 1971. That one looks younger than Rosine, and is accompanied by a equally young boy and another girl (or boy?) in a second plane, turned backwards.

This painting was once regarded by Ariel herself, fancifully, as a “portrait de famille avant l’heure” (a family portrait before its time), figuring her, her partner and me (and our father and other relatives…). Now it makes me think, rather more, of an allegorical triple portrait of her at puberty (even if she never had much pubic hair -which was blond, aside of scanty- and her eyes were light grey). The ship on sea, at the left hand side, would represent departure, since she is physically gone now.

Because of it, and due to the symbolic position of magenta midway between blue and red, its extra-spectral nature and Ariel’s own taste for it, I have edited this painting’s colours to show magenta-hued skins:

La primera vegada que vaig veure “Rosine” -un oli del pintor surrealista belga Paul Delvaux, del 1968- em vaig dir “aquesta noia alta i prima amb barret vermell i ventall s’assembla molt a l’Ariel”. Fet i fet, tota una colla de dones en pintures de Delvaux de les últimes dues dècades tenen una retirada manifesta amb la meva germana, però aquesta de “Rosine” era ben bé ersatz (almenys vista -com és el cas- de costat i un xic per darrere). –[Podeu mirar el quadre sencer al meu segon post sobre Paul Delvaux just aquí.]

No gaires d’aquestes dones joves (potser adolescents) duen un capell vermell tan distintiu, tanmateix; només una, que jo tingui ara present: la figura més lluminosa a “Hommage à Jules Verne”, de 1971. Aquesta sembla encara més jove que Rosine i està acompanyada d’un noi igualment jove i d’una altra noia (o noi?) en segon pla, girada d’esquena.

Aquesta pintura era vista per l’Ariel, fantasiosament, com un “portrait de famille avant l’heure” on figurava ella, la seva companya i jo mateix (i el pare, i més parents nostres…). Ara em fa pensar més aviat en un retrat al·legòric triple de l’Ariel a la pubertat (per bé que ella mai no va tenir gaire pèl púbic -que era ros, a banda d’escadusser- i els seus ull eren grisos clars). El vaixell al mar, a mà esquerra, vindria a representar la partença, ja que ella, físicament, ja se n’ha anat.

Per tot això, i degut a la posició simbòlica del magenta a mig camí del blau i el vermell, la seva natura extra-espectral i el gust personal de l’Ari envers aquest color, he editat la pintura per tal que mostri les pells de tons magenta:
