Urgency resolution: violence against women in India

“The problem we are dealing here with has not only to do with the inacceptable rapes occurred recently in India. Though, I recall, 2 million of women and girls die every year, in India, because of the sexual violence.

The institutional lack of adequate response, and the IMPUNITY that some seem to promote as a rule, needs to be condemned.

But beyond that, the real problem is the patriarchal system. In India, and elsewhere.

The EU should be much stronger on its calls against discrimination against women all over the world, inside and outside its borders.

All representations must include the sexual assault and the need for a uniform protocol for treatment and examination of sexual assault survivors in their dialogues with the Indian authorities, and others.

No room for false cultural relativism, or excuses. A crime is a crime, and culture should never be misused to cover it.

If we want to be credible on that matter, let’s speak loud and clear.”
