The Estatut that came into force in August has not solved the "Catalan question". Neither has its solved Catalonia's accumulated deficit, and especially with its infrastructures. The proof of this is the political unhappiness over the announcement by Pedro Solbes, the finance minister, that €3,195 million would be spent on infrastructure next year. CiU, ERC and even ICV are not happy with this. First because budget negotiations with Spain were carried out with one eye on the election, as the Catalan Socialists have tried to make the most out of it. Secondly, because Catalan businessman had expected the budget resulting from the new Estatut to be upwards of €500 million . The announcement has been accompanied by unclear figures, and is marked by party and election interests. It coincided with a series of breakdowns on the railway system –on top of the AVE works– that showed the lack of money being spent on Renfe in Catalonia. Meanwhile, the debate over transferring management of El Prat airport to the Generalitat continues, while Catalans become outraged over the fragile railway system. And all this has taken place before Mobility Week.

Year after year, more evidence gathers to support the case for a Catalan state. The lack of political will to grant Catalonia a wider autonomy and a fair budgetary treatment within Spain boosts the numbers of Catalans willing to gain a seat at the EU Councils, avoiding unefficient and mandatory passage via Madrid.

Historically most Catalans have been willing to accomodate with more autonomy.  However, this road seems to be heavily blocked.  The proposed status for a wider autonomy voted by 90% at the Catalan Parliament was turned down and the President that advocated for a federalist Spain has been removed from his post following admitted heavy pressure from Spanish party comrades.

Catalans faced with the current dilemma of a centralist state or an own one, they are moving towards choice #2, fostered by the unability of the Spanish state to reform itself.

  • A shit like a rural house!

All this things (and some other ones that would be hard to detail) confirms that the marvelous Estatut'06 is a shit like a rural house -as people says in Catalonia.

The unceasing grievance list is so incommensurable that Catalonia's Independence appears as the one and only way to become a normal comunity in the world. But... How could catalan people be free? Ah, my friend! The damned autocton highclass political men only know how to sea-sick the partridge and they don't work for the Independence. They always say: "These are figs from another panier". And this is how we spend the time.
